Music Review: Laura Story – Open Hands

If you have been listening to Christian music for any length of time, you are no doubt familiar with the music of Laura Story. Her breakout hit ‘Blessings’ spoke to people around the world. Her song ‘What a Savior’ has also been extremely popular with today’s listeners and contemporary church congregations.

Laura’s voice is sometimes mellow, sometimes gritty, full of passion and she has a beautiful low register, which I particularly identify with as a worship leader.

Laura’s new album ‘Open Hands’ will certainly be popular with Christian music enthusiasts. This is an engaging and deeply spiritual set of worshipful original songs.

Take a look at the story behind the title song:

As the second cut on the album, the song is extremely singable and has some really nice duet harmonies with featured vocalist Mac Powell.

The first song on the album, ‘Death Was Arrested” has a bit of a country/rockabilly flavor.

I particularly thought that the song ‘Give You Faith’ was precious. This is a song that speaks of the fact that out of all of the things we give our children, to give them faith is the most important gift of all. This song would be absolutely perfect for a baby or child dedication service.

For the Love of My King is a wonderful retooling of the classic hymn ‘My Jesus, I Love Thee’ with a hard hitting interlude/chorus. There are many churches, including mine, who use contemporary music but are always looking to incorporate the great hymns of our faith into our worship service. This song fits the bill for that.

The song ‘Majesty’ is beautiful – a simply worded love song to the power and majesty of God.

And check out the hook lyric on the last song, “Grace Abounds” – it says ‘When it seems as if hope can’t be found, grace abounds.” Doesn’t that just say it all?
