We try to have dinner as a family most nights of the week. Usually we have no problems finding things to talk about. The boys are chatterboxes! But we love the Family Honor Plate! For several reasons. Read on…

First, it was a ton of fun just making our own creation. The plate is white with the words on it, but comes with paint brushes and a set of paints so that you and your children can make your own beautiful creation.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS INCLUDED:

  • Ceramic Family Honor Plate to be painted by YOU!
  • 8 Vibrant USA-made enamel paints
  • 3 Paint brushes
  • 1 Painter’s palette
  • 1 Plate stand
  • Bonus Pack of Sample Table Thyme Discussion Starters
  • Online Support through Parenting and Instructional videos created to encourage and support you.

The virtues are listed in the center of the plate for mom and dad to use as their anchor, their moral compass to guide them in how they need to show up for and to their children.  This is how our children learn what character (Christ’s Character) is, what it looks like, what it feels like. Our children are watching us and learning from us.

Plate

You can use the plate in all kinds of ways: serve something to the whole family, use it for company, or our favorite, when we “catch” one of the kids doing something that shows good character or integrity, their next meal is served on the Family Honor Plate.

It’s so important that we reinforce our childrens’ good behavior and not just point out the bad choices. The boys now ask, “Do I get to eat from the Honor Plate?”

We have also used it for a plate of “special” treats (aka brownies) and the boys can have one when they are “caught” doing good stuff. It’s amazing what these kids will do for a brownie. (Well, it’s amazing what I would do for a brownie :) )

The other great addition to the plate is a set of “Let’s Talk” discussion cards. There are several cards with questions on them designed to be prompts for talking with your children and really drilling down deep to uncover their thoughts and feelings. Even when we’re not using the Family Honor Plate, we choose a question from the cards to discuss at the dinner table. Sometimes our discussions are serious, and sometimes they’re hilarious. Exactly what you would expect with kids at the table.

Every question is followed up with “Why?” to take everyone’s answers to a deeper more intimate level.  That’s where the magic is and the real conversation starts. For example: when my ten year old was asked what is some advice you could give to someone that would make their life easier? (And why?), he answered, “I would tell people to accept Jesus. It doesn’t really make their life easier, but it makes their life better.” Out of the mouths of babes. Oh my heart!
