“I received the Little Mermaid Legacy Collection CD as a member of the Entertainment New Media Network. No further compensation was received and all opinions are my own.”
When I got the chance to receive a copy of the Little Mermaid CD from Disney’s new Legacy Collection, I was thrilled! This has long been one of my favorites, and I was excited about introducing the great music to my little guys.
When we received the CD, I was surprised to see that it was, in fact, a 2-CD set and it was enclosed in a book. The book has several different collaborators who tell you how this film and its music came about, from inception to completion. It was so interesting to read what Alan Menken, the composer of the score had to say. I was shocked to read that Little Mermaid was his very first movie score. Seriously??? Wow! And to win an Oscar for ‘Under the Sea’ your first time out of the box? That is pure genius. He went on to do the music for ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Aladdin’, both having hit songs that crossed over into the mainstream.
The Little Mermaid was Disney’s first ‘Princess’ film since 1959’s Sleeping Beauty, and it was a smashing success. Little girls all over the place wanted to be Ariel and to “…be where the people are.” This movie ignited a new passion for the Disney genre and animated movies in general. Did you know that the Little Mermaid was the last feature animated film at Disney to use traditional hand inked and painted cells for the animation? After that, everything went digital. As a matter of fact, the final scene of the film depicting the wedding barge (spoiler alert )sailing away under a rainbow is the first digitally inked and painted scene done at the Walt Disney Animation Studios.
In the book you will find all of the songs listed with their lyrics, so your kids (okay…let’s be honest…you!) can sing right along with the CD. Too fun. “Whaddya call ‘em? Oh…feet!”
As soon as I put the CD on and it got to “Under the Sea” my little guys started dancing. Before the impromptu dance party broke out, these little guys actually just sat quietly listening to the music. At 7 and 2, that’s a miracle in and of itself! You could just see pure delight on their little faces.
I can see this book and CD duo being a great tool for a homeschool teaching unit. The possibilities are endless. Your kids could learn about film, musical scores, animation/art, etc. You could expand to science lessons about the sea. Explore how music, movies and art work together. Learn to cook a seafood dish. Integrate a math lesson in units of measurement along with your seafood recipe. I could go on and on.
