The Biblical parable of the prodigal son has always been one of my favorite stories from the Bible since the time that I was a young child. As an adult, it remains a favorite, because every time I read it, or every time I hear a sermon on this passage, something new is revealed. I love how God does that…you can read the same thing over and over and it keeps affecting you and speaking to you differently each time. That is supernatural!
The movie ‘Confessions of a Prodigal Son‘ is a modern day retelling of this parable told in a relevant way that will resonate with today’s people, both young and old alike.
Sean, the main character, (played by Nathan Clarkson) does what so many young people do – he gets away, thinking that life without his dad (Kevin Sorbo from ‘God’s Not Dead’) will be all about freedom and making his own choices. But here’s the problem: his choices lead him deeply down a path he doesn’t want to go. Two years after he leaves home, Sean starts questioning his choices and decisions. The impetus is a challenge by a professor. Not only that, but his best friend is making some dangerous choices, and as with all good stories, there’s a girl involved.
The great thing about this movie is that it will open the door for parents, pastors and teachers to talk to young people about not only their choices, but about how our heavenly Father welcomes us back when we’ve messed up. All we have to do is take a step toward Him and just like the father in the parable, He comes to us and then celebrates us! How cool is that!
