Movie Review: The Good Dinosaur

Last week, we piled the kids in the car and headed to an advance screening of Disney Pixar’s new animated feature, ‘The Good Dinosaur’. I had not seen a whole lot about the film and wasn’t sure what to expect. Plus it was the three year old’s first time at a movie…so we’d see what would happen!

I didn’t even know that the film was 3D! Let’s talk about that for a minute – the last 3D film I saw was several years ago, and it gave me a killer headache. The 3D just wasn’t done well and it just wasn’t enjoyable. Fast forward to now. The 3D in this movie was incredible! They have come a long way with this technique and I thoroughly enjoyed that!

After we got into the theater, things didn’t go well (at first). If you’ve been to Disney Pixar movies, you know that they all start with a short film. The short before the Good Dinosaur is called ‘Sanjay’s Super Team’. There are monsters in it that had half the kids in the theater crying in terror, including my two. (Eight and three). We were not impressed.

But on to the main event. The main feature was wonderful! Our three year old sat there spellbound the entire time. Because of the 3D effects, you literally felt as though you were inside the film.

The movie “stars” a young apatosaurus named Arlo who is determined to “make his mark” in the world. He sets off on an adventure in which he befriends an unlikely human child – sort of a feral dog child named Spot. I kid you not. And Spot bites the head off of a huge bug at one point making all of the little boys in the theater giggle uncontrollably to see bug guts in a move. Boys.

This particular Pixar film probably won’t appeal to adults as much as some of the others. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s specifically a kid’s movie with kid humor. Our two enjoyed it immensely!

The overarching theme of the story is facing your fears, and regardless of who you are, you can make a difference.

If you’re looking for a fun movie to see over the holidays – this should do it!
