Music Review: Adore; Christmas Songs of Worship by Chris Tomlin

Adore Chris Tomlin

I love Chris Tomlin, and this new Christmas album does not disappoint!

The first thing I noticed about this collection of songs is that they’re so “singable”. You know how there are some songs that are intricate and complex? You love to listen to them but they’re a little difficult to sing along with? This album contains eleven songs that are really easy to sing along with, although don’t mistake that for music that’s elementary; this is rich, multi-layered music.

You will recognize some traditional lyrics with different tunes, and some traditional Christmas songs that you know and love.

The first track, ‘He Shall Reign Forevermore‘ starts quietly and builds, builds, builds until you’re hearing a huge celebration of the birth of Christ!

And the title track, ‘Adore’ begins with a simple and lovely guitar and piano intro.

The entire album has a feel of hopeful, excited expectancy. The music feels like the soundtrack to “something’s about to happen…”.

Interestingly, my favorite song is by guest artist Lauren Daigle entitled ‘Noel’. Daigle has a big, big voice and this song is exquisite and luxurious. It’s likely that I love this one because as a trained female vocalist myself, the songs I typically sing are “big” songs (think Streisand and Dion). This is definitely one that I’ll put in my Christmas repertoire.

Tomlin then brings in the group ‘All Sons and Daughters’ to help out on ‘What Child is This’. The harmonies are pure and tight, and there’s a stunning a’ cappella section at the end with some chilling new lyrics.

Moving on – we hear a jazzy, trippy version of Away in a Manger with a cool sounding stand up bass in the accompaniment.

The final track ‘A Christmas Alleluia’ ties everything together wonderfully. The chord progressions are interesting and the song starts with a beautiful string-accompanied unison verse. It’s lovely in its simplicity. Tomlin joins with Daigle and All Sons and Daughters on this one to cap off a great Christmas album!
