Book Review: The Plans I Have For You Devotional and Journal for Kids

Here at our house, we fervently believe that our children are never too young to begin learning about God’s plan for their lives. We have introduced them to devotions at an early age, and when we received the opportunity to take a look at this ‘The Plans I Have For You’ devotional and journal, we were thrilled! And so was our little guy.

See, since he was about 5 years old, he has said that he wants to be a pastor. I can’t imagine having that kind of conviction at five. Now that he’s the ripe old age of eight, that conviction still stands. Going through this devotional and journaling has only made his conviction stronger.

This child has a beautiful heart; gentle, kind, nurturing and loving; exactly the characteristics you’d look for in a pastor.  When we do school during the day (he’s homeschooled), we may get a groan about math or spelling, but never about Bible reading.

This devotional and journal will help your children begin to understand that God does have a wondrous and marvelous plan for their life. It’s not too soon to begin delving into that and discovering what the Lord has in store!

The devotional is a hard back book with 90 days of reading. There are six sections, each with 15 short readings centered around a particular theme:

Sector 1: I’ve Got Big Plans for YOU
Sector 2: I’ve Given YOU a Purpose
Sector 3: I Don’t Do Things Small
Sector 4: There’s Nothing YOU Can’t Do!
Sector 5: Find That ONE Thing
Sector 6: What I Created YOU To Do

I think that too often, children don’t understand that there is a plan and purpose for their lives. And that’s probably because we parents may not give it as much thoughtful and spiritual consideration as we should. It’s too tempting to think, “He’s only 8 – there’s time enough later to figure out God’s plan.” But think about how far ahead spiritually our little ones would be if we started them on their life’s journey earlier! While we still have so much influence!

The journal is paperback and gives children encouraging prompts and questions to explore their hearts. I love what my little guy wrote on his first entry. The question asked, “What plans for your future do you feel God whispering to your heart?” His answer: Dad, Husband, Pastor. He’s totally not into girls, (eeeuuuww!!) but he already has a desire to be a husband and a father one day.

The journal also has six sections that go hand in hand with the sections of the devotional. You could certainly have just one or the other – they will stand alone nicely, but together they’re wonderful! By the time your child is finished with the journal and the devotional, there will be absolutely no doubt to them that God has a beautiful plan in store for them, and they will be well on their way to discovering it.
