The people who make the Ninja Cooking System sent me one to try out and share my thoughts with you! And I am happy to report that this is my new FAVE small appliance! I really love this for a number of reasons: (And keep in mind…slow cooking is only ONE of the options you have for this – it steams, bakes and roasts, too!)

• You can make meals without turning on your oven, saving electricity/gas and not heating up your kitchen. I live in Florida where it’s hotter than, well, you know, so this is a huge plus for me!
• You can make all sorts of one-pot meals. Anything that reduces the number of pots and pans I have to wash gets an A+++ from me! You know how you have to brown ground beef for spaghetti, or sear beef pieces for beef stew in a skillet and then transfer to a slow cooker or pot? No more – you can brown your meat right on the stovetop setting.
• This little wonder steams, roasts, and even bakes cupcakes! Amazing! (I know, I sound like an infomercial…but this little appliance really is awesome!)

So I decided to try out one of the recipes that came with the unit – Skillet Lasagna. So incredibly easy! And I have never made lasagna before – any kind of lasagna.

I’m going to share the recipe with you, and then make sure that you watch the video below to learn more about the Ninja Cooking System.

Skillet Lasagna

Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup chopped onion (optional)
• 1 pound of ground beef
• 10 lasagna noodles, broken into 2-inch pieces
• 1 jar of spaghetti sauce – 24 oz
• 1 1/2 cups water
• 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
• 1/2 cup of ricotta cheese
• 1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese

If using onion, brown the onion on the ‘stovetop’ setting on high until onion is clear/translucent or caramelized. (If using onion, you’ll want to add a tablespoon or so of Extra Virgin Olive Oil)

Add ground beef, and brown for about 10 minutes. (Note: this does not get at hot as on the stovetop, nor does it get quite as brown)

Arrange lasagna pieces over beef, pour in spaghetti sauce and water. Cover with the Ninja Lid.
Cook on ‘stovetop’ setting on medium for about 20 minutes or until noodles are tender.
Turn unit off.

Mix cheeses in bowl, and pour over lasagna mixture. Let it set for about 3 minutes until cheese is melty and gooey. Enjoy!!!

My notes: since our family loves cheese, I added more shredded mozzarella over the top of the whole thing. I also added about 2 tablespoons of chopped, fresh oregano since I have it growing and I could just pick it and use it. You could add whatever fresh herbs you have to the meat mixture for extra flavor.

The verdict? Well, the six year old, who was convinced that he wouldn’t like it, said, “This is amazing! I LOVE it!” The meal was delicious, and only took about 30 minutes to prepare. Really? Lasagna in 30 minutes??? It also cost less than $10 and we have plenty of leftovers. Plus, my house smelled like an authentic Italian Cucina while this delectable dish was cooking.

Then next day, I used the slow cooker setting and made a tasty and hearty hamburger and potato casserole. Another big hit! Tonight? I’m using the baking setting and making homemade chicken potpie! Click the link for my recipe.

If you have a big kid and a little kid, you know that the little kid invariably wants to do what the big kid does!

The big kid loves to ride his bike, and the little kid, who’s only 2 and a half years old, thinks he should be able to ride one, too. But until we were introduced to the Strider Bike, we figured that this was impossible. Not so! The great folks at who make the Strider Bike sent us one for out little guy to try out, and so that we could share our thoughts with you.

When the bike first arrived, our little guy saw it and immediately started saying, “Bike! Wow!” He could tell that it was just his size and could hardly wait for us to get it out of the box. Assembly was super easy and took only a few minutes with no tools required, and within about 5 minutes he had his helmet on and was on his bike (all under the watchful eye of his protective big brother!).

If you’ve ever taught a kid how to ride a bike (remember the endless huffing and puffing and you ran alongside???), then you know that the most difficult part is for them to master balancing and peddling together. The bike that our little guy has for now is the Strider Sport model for kids 18 months to 5 years. Every now and then, we come across a company whose products are intriguing. And that was the case with Volt Resistance. They offer a full line of heated clothing products to keep cold out and comfort in, and they were kind enough to send me one of their heated jackets to try out and share with you.

This is my friend Grace. She was visiting a few days ago and was cold inside the house (I’m not sure how that even happens in Florida!). So I said, “Grace! I have just the thing for you to try if you’ll be my model.” She was a reluctant model, but absolutely loved the jacket! (No, Grace, you can’t keep it!)

The first thing you’ll notice is that this jacket is cute; both athletic and stylish. It’s pretty thin (but warm!), so you can easily wear it either under or over other garments. It’s a half-zip style with contrasting stitching. It has a touch of spandex with a super comfortable, soft brushed fleece lining. It has a stand up collar, the fabric has antimicrobial properties and it’s even machine washable, which is wonderful.

Here’s how it works: you first charge a 5 volt USB powerbank battery (the kind that would give you a portable power source for your phone, for example). And I love this jacket so much that if I’m planning to be out for awhile, you can bet I’ll have a spare battery ready to roll.

After charging, you connect the battery to the jacket inside the pocket.

After plugging in the battery, you hold down the power button for three seconds and it will come on, then cycle from red (high) to blue (medium) to green (low) and back to RED. The warm up is supposed to take about 5 minutes, but we found that it warmed up in only about 2 minutes. The heat targets the back of the neck through the collar and the upper back between your shoulder blades. The heat provided a nice, gentle warmth. Nothing uncomfortably warm, and with the three power settings, you’ll get exactly the amount of heat you want.

When the jacket is on and heating, you’ll see the power button lit up.

By using a 3 level external silicone switch, you can easily change heat settings and visually confirm which setting the jacket is on.  As with all of the Voltheat.com products, the lower the heat setting you are on, the longer the battery will last.

There’s a stylish zipper pocket on the left sleeve that is the perfect size for your cell phone or other item(s) that you need to have with you.

The only thing that we feel you need to be aware of is that these jackets may tend to run a bit small. Grace wears a size medium, or 8 to 10 in “real life” and this jacket is an extra large. It fit her pretty well and she just had on a t-shirt underneath, but she is definitely not an extra large sized girl, so you may want to order a size up when you purchase your jacket.

Bottom line? This jacket is superb. It’s easy to use, the battery lasts a good long time, and it is budget friendly at less than $120. That’s a super price for such a superior heated garment. I’ll be taking this one with me to New York City this Christmas. Because I almost froze to death last Christmas. And that isn’t my idea of a good time.

First we tried a Fuzzy Driver – take 2 oz Epic Peach vodka, 1 oz of Peach Schnapps, and 4 oz orange juice. Pour over glass of ice. For a sweeter drink, use Sunny D instead of OJ.

The second that we tried was red berries and we made a ‘sort of’ Cosmopolitan. We used 1 part red berries vodka, 1 part triple sec, a splash of fresh lime juice, and mixed it with a blueberry/pomegranate juice blend (but you could use cranberry or any juice you like). This one was really good – refreshing.

The last one was a super yummy White Russian. Use 2 ounces of classic unflavored vodka, 1 ounce of Kahlúa and heavy cream. Add the vodka and Kahlúa to an Old Fashioned glass filled with ice. Top with a large splash of heavy cream and stir. Okay – like I said, dessert in a glass.

Mr. Coupondipity and I often say that we love the times that we are living in. I think this is mostly due to the amazing technology that is breaking out seemingly on a daily basis. We’re old enough to remember when technology basically meant a transistor AM/FM radio! When we think about how far we have come, it is mind-blowing. And Best Buy is a huge reason why we enjoy technology so much. We buy all of our audio equipment at Best Buy because they have the best selection and prices around. And their sales staff is professional, experienced and incredibly helpful. Our last purchase at Best Buy was our BluRay player, which we bought just a few months ago and LOVE!

And recently, Best Buy sent us one of the products that was featured in the August Audio Fest: an HEOS 5 Wireless Speaker by Denon. Because he’s better at it, I asked Mr. Coupondipity to do the review on this awesome piece of audio amazement!

Here’s what he has to say:

Easy to Set-up HEOS 5

Setting up – everything was pretty simple and only took a few of minutes. ‘Un-Boxing‘ it (as my fellow Italian Artist calls it) was pretty amazing with the way it was ‘presented’ with so many little packaging presentation touches that let me know right from the start that this was something special.

You can set it up with either a network or a cable that connects your device to the speaker. I set mine up with the WiFi network and the downloaded iPhone app guided me through everything I needed to do.

At the center, bottom of the speaker there is an LED light that lights up to tell you  the status of the speaker. For example, flashing blue indicates it is searching for devices to connect to and solid blue indicates fully connected. I imagine once you have set up one HEOS speaker in your home though, any other HEOS speakers that you add will copy the connection information so you should only have to connect using a cable once.

Easy to Navigate iPhone App

The iPhone app is very simple to navigate and its simplicity is certainly one of its best attributes. There are basically three elements to the app: Rooms, Music and Now Playing.

The Rooms section is where you will find a list of all the speakers in your house connected to your device. (Only one in my current use).  A very cool part of this section is that you can apparently ‘group‘ the rooms together by holding down  the name of one room speaker and dragging it on top of another. And moving one speaker above another speaker will turn it into the ‘lead‘ or ‘first’ speaker.

The Music section of the app is where I found all the streaming services compatible with the HEOS 5 system – such as Spotify, Napster, and Pandora. Denon says there will be quarterly updates to the system where they will add other streaming services such as iTunes (which is suppose to be on their list, Yay!). I was most interested in accessing all my music on my iPhone.

The Now Playing section is how you control the system itself. If you want to play, pause, control the volume or see what’s playing, this is the section that you would head to.

There is a Settings Section of the app that also gives you the option to share the music on your device with the HEOS 5, which allows you to access the music on any device in your house that has its music sharing turned on. So even if your iPhone (or other device) with all your music on it is tucked away somewhere, you can still stream music to the HEOS 5 from it without having to actually go and get it.

Great Performance

The speaker certainly comes alive and fills the room with full-sounding music. The one thing I did notice was that the volume control on the iPhone app wasn’t as sensitive as I would like; it didn’t seem to register until it reached about a third of the way through the slider. There are separate volume buttons on the speaker for you to crank up the volume if you want to.

Great Design

I really like the look of the HEOS 5 with its tear-drop shape – appearing almost like an iPhone docking device. And its simplicity is certainly one of its best selling points. It looks good, sounds great and has some pretty cool features.

Now I want to buy an additional speaker (or two) to expand my ‘whole-house’ music system…
