“The Caramel Apple Election” is a full color, fully illustrated 8.5″ x 11″ book that tells a charming story that pits “red apples” against “green apples” in a contest to see which apple makes the best caramel apple.
The book is a guide for teachers, youth leaders and home schoolers at the elementary education grade level to hold a mock election that teaches the kids all about voting and for everyone involved to have a great time. Author Vanessa Purdom’s goal is to have “as many Caramel Apple Elections” staged across the land in the fall of 2012 as possible.
Purdom says the idea was born in fall 2010 while she was volunteering in her kids’ school. “I was pondering how to bring in a healthy treat and at the same time incorporate it into a fun activity. The teacher was super supportive and we actually held an apple election in my daughter’s classroom. We did graphs, cast ballots, and counted the votes after I gave a brief lecture. After the whole experience, I realized that it would have been much cooler to have a story to go along with our activities.”
Describing herself as the quintessential insomniac and multitasker, Purdom says she would work on the book at night when she needed a break from studying for the Oklahoma bar. After the bar, she sent her manuscript out to tons of publishers – all rejected.
“But I am not a quitter and knew it was a great idea, so I perservered. Before pursuing self publishing, God led me to Janet (the best thing since sliced bagels) and the rest is history.
“I was fascinated when she called,” said Janet Verdeguer of Granny Apple Publishing. “Most of these mock elections like the National Mock Election are held for the older kids using the real candidates. Vanessa had come up with a way to teach younger kids but take out any reference to political parties or negativity. I thought she had a winner.”
“We are working to expand marketing and distribution as quickly as possible across the USA including listing it as a project at www.KickStarter.com (search for projects in Sarasota, Florida or Publishing Children’s Book) to raise a national marketing budget. Anyone who pledges at least $5 can monitor our progress throughout July. Teachers select materials for their fall classrooms in August or sooner, so time is of the essence.”
“We are also in negotiations to set up Caramel Apple Election accessories, pre-printed stickers, buttons, t-shirts, aprons, posters, etc.”
The quality trade paperback book is on sale for $11.95 at Amazon.com
