Should Prayer Be Allowed in School?

Comments

  1. Rosemarie says:

I tell the kids all the time prayer IS allowed in school because no one can stop you from praying in your heart any time any place.

  2. MollyG says:

Anybody can “pray” anytime they like, in their head, but NO, prayer should NOT be “led” in school. It shouldn’t be something the school does. If a child wants to pray before lunch or just… whenever, that’s their choice, it just should NOT be part of curriculum.

  3. jacqueline says:

no there is a time and place for all that_kids have enough to concentrate on

  4. Erica Russell says:

Yes. Isn’t that what this country is about; Freedom of Religon. If a child wants to pray, by all means go ahead same as if a child doesn’t want to.

  5. Amanda says:

Yes, it should be allowed because everyone is free to worship as they please. I do NOT think that it should be forced on anyone or done in a classroom or led by the teacher. I think that in some cases, a prayer or quiet room should be made in a school for any child to pray however they please to whichever religion they please. Unfortunately, I do not see that happening.

  6. Lily Curry says:

No matter what religion all children should be able to express themselves and prayer is an expression of the heart

  7. Lisa Burke Cook says:

Yes, I do believe that prayer should be allowed in school and the ones who want to recognize and worship our Lord can, it is freedom of speech and we allow kids to wear demonic t-shirts and clothing and nothing is done so why can’t my child stand up in what she believes in.

  8. sharon albert says:

No, because it violates separation of church and state. It would be unfair to pressure kids to pray to the ones that most people worship

  9. Diane S says:

Children will do what they’re taught in their homes. I believe that every single person should have the freedom to express themselves freely though.

  10. Prenita says:

No. Freedom FROM religion is also important. If you’re somewhere that no one minds if you pray…fine. But public schools are funded by the government. Church has no place in school. If you’d like your child to pray or be taught tall tales..send them to a school run by your religion. Or homeschool them.

  11. Lida Bureau says:

I think yes they should be allowed if desired. I don’t think it’s anyone place to say oh no you cannot pray on these premises. But then again I think people should pray more than just when they are ill and in need. But that is my opinion and I am entitled to it :)

  12. Jennifer Kinney says:

Yes I believe that prayer should be allowed in school. Our country was founded by those searching for a place to practice their religious beliefs and we have gotten away from so many of the freedoms that the founding fathers faught hard for. It also might make children feel safer or give them some peace of mind. It is not something to be forced on them but what they want to do.

  13. Kristy says:

Absolutely! Prayer should be allowed in school, our country was created due to want of freedom of religion. In this country, the right to pray should never be taken away from anyone, at any time, even in school. It’s called having a relationship with their God, or higher power.

  14. smith hunter craven says:

it is a god given right to pray from chilhood to adult dont ever let the man tell you

  15. amanda ward says:

Yes I think anyone should be able to pray any where….and my kids will pray in school even if they are told not to……they will be praying for those people who tell them not to pray…………

  16. when i was younger(many many years ago) we did the pledge to the flag EVERY morning and a prayer before starting our classes..

  17. Heidi Freitas says:

They always say there should be a separation between church and state, yet the church is what our society was built upon. Our currency has “In God We Trust” printed on it, they swear the president in with one hand on the bible, any official meeting in the senate or congress is opened with prayer. I understand that everyone has the right to believe is what they believe and I understand that every teacher can’t spend 30 minutes a day praying with the children to ensure that everyones religion is covered, but you could have silent prayer (not spoken out loud) everyday and that would allow each child to pray or have a quiet moment to themselves. Then no one is left out and the day can begin.

  18. this country was built on god,we’re doing all children a real disservice,no moral values anymore!yes the prayer should be back in school and the pledge of allience w/god in it!god has blessed america,it’s time to bless god before it’s too late!

  19. Tina Aguilar says:

I believe it should be allowed in school. No one should be able to tell someone they are wrong for praying or vice versa. If you believe you should be able to pray, if you don’t believe that is your right & your opinion. No one should be able to take something away from someone just because they don’t believe. Just like you shouldn’t force someone to pray if they don’t believe in it. JMO though : )

  20. Alisa Baker says:

I don’t approve of forcing the kids to pray. Everyone is entitled to their opwn way of praying. I know praying does go on in school, every time their is a test.

  21. Heidi Freitas,
First off “in god we trust” wasn’t added to american currency until 1957 so it’s not like it was always there. All the other things you mention like swearing on a bible and praying before meetings need stopped. Separation of church and state is needed and important. I’m sure if it were a religion other the Christianity being shoved down peoples throats you would have a very different opinion.

  22. Mia says:

Back 30+ years ago, I was raised to pray before classes begin and said our pledge to the flag. I’m religious but I wouldn’t force prayers at my kids schools. The schools are very diverse with so many different nationalities! Everyone has their own religion and would not want to force that on the children/students. If they want their kids to learn about religion then they can go to church for that. If they want the kids to learn in school then let the schools stick to their curriculum and teach. This is what this great country of ours is. The freedom to say and do and pray to any God we want! There should be a separation between church and state!

  23. Brittani Hickey says:

First off I want to start with I believe in freedom of speech and I also recognize that not everyone believes in God. But with saying that I am a christian and I feel that if my children would like to pray in school then they should be allowed to without being judged by their teacher or told to stop. But I also feel that we should respect others beliefs. Because of the mixed cultures I the school I do not feel the teacher should lead it only that it should’ve allowed if children want to do it.

  24. Mary Haney says:

Yes! prayer should be allowed in school. My teen daughter prays before every test and she and i both think she shouldnt have to hide it!

  25. Terri Barton says:

I think a creative solution to prayer in schools is this. Each teacher should ask each student what their religious beliefs are, the ones that are comfortable sharing that is. Then, the teacher should speak to the parents of each of the religious groups to learn about how they “pray”. Then as a learning exercise, the class could “pray” each day under each religion. This way the students are learning about different religions, and learning new beliefs and cultures. Not saying this should be mandated, but I think it would be a good idea….

  26. Billie says:

There is a very big difference between prayer being ALLOWED in school vs prayer being TAUGHT or FORCED in school. With that having been said, Yes, prayer SHOULD be ALLOWED in school. If someone finds it offensive that another student is praying silently to themselves before a test, a game or a meal, then don’t look at the person praying – Simple, easy, HARMLESS! In other words, Get over it as long as you aren’t being forced to bow your head and recite it, who cares?! I’d be pleased as punch to hear of my boys doing so!!!

On a different side of the spectrum, if sending your child to a known Christian school (IE: Private Catholic Schools, Private Baptist Schools, etc…), the parent is already well aware to expect prayer will be held/taught in the institution and should not be offended by such actions. It is the parent who made the informed choice of sending their child(ren) to said school.

  27. Amanda says:

It depends on your definition of “allowed”. If you mean should prayer be recited in schools, no. Every religion is different and there is just no way to accommodate them all. However, I do believe people should be allowed to pray in school without getting in trouble. I believe prayer is something that can be done any time or anywhere. It does not require special symbols or rituals, in my opinion. Therefore you can’t really say “we don’t allow prayer in school” because there really is no way to stop it. I used to pray all the time in school and no one even knew it.

  28. Kay Juarez says:

Yes, absolutely! I like the idea of telling my sons that prayer is allowed in schools, because they cant keep you from praying if you want to!

  29. Erika Lowery says:

When in school, years ago, I had a magnet that read “as long as there are tests, quizzes, exams; there will be prayer in school”. It was very true. Even my atheist friends would be caught saying “PLEASE GOD, let me pass”.
The courts say a separation of church and state, but many schools rent out their halls for church services here to help with expenses. I think it should be all or nothing. If you don’t let a kid pray to whomever, don’t take a church’s money.

Schools out here are hypocrites to the nth degree.

  30. Edward says:

I believe that prayer should be allowed, but not forced or required, it should be done at a time that doesn’t interrupt school activities.

  31. Melinda Dartmann says:

No prayer shouldn’t be allowed in school. I’m not against religion of any sorts but that is a place of education not religion. It should be left at home or in church.

  32. gilbert s says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  33. CJ Young says:

As long as there are tests there will be prayer in schools. Prayer should be allowed, but prayer for which ever belief system the child belongs to and if the child does not belong to a belief system they can use the quite time for other things. The teacher should not lead the class in prayer but allow the children to pray on thier own.

  34. Judy Dailey says:

There has been prayer since the beginning of school as we know it..When i was in school we had prayer but anyone that was not allowed to participate stood in the hall till we completed. I still think there should be prayer in school. Much is what is wrong with America today. First took prayer away, then the pledge. I do know we have a variety of cultures, but schools could start morning with each going to their denominational, or if atheist a separate room. And if you live in America then should learn the Pledge;;; just saying

  35. I feel that it SHOULD be allowed in school. Not forced but allowed.

  36. Nikole says:

Prayer SHOULD be aloud in schools! No question about it. weve became a society that thinks its okay to express yourself in anything BUT a faith in God. No one ever goes into schools and says “hey, this school is practicing Atheism, because there isnt any religion around!” The farther we move from God is just proving (yet again) how TRUE the Bible and (real) Bible prophecy is. Our children NEED God and they need the freedom to pray wherever and whenever they need Gods guideness.

  37. Amber Tegeler says:

There is the separation of church and state in our government. So PUBLIC school should not be allowed to schedule or lead prayer in school. HOWEVER, that does not mean an individual does not have the right to hold prayer for themselves. That is freedom of religion. If a child wishes to pray before a meal, that is his/her choice to do so. But a teacher or figure of authority in the school cannot lead the students into prayer. Private religious schools, however, can run the school with prayer however they deem fit by their religion.

  38. cristy Layne` says:

Of course… Its a free world with freedom of SPEECH!!

  39. trish says:

    yes

  40. Crystal Gibson says:

I only have one word here… YES…….. I dont need to explain reasons! However I will.. Each family has a choice in how they want to raise their children, and if Prayer is a belief they raise their kids with, then kids should be allowed to pray.. THEY ARE KIDS! WHAT HARM CAN IT DO?

  41. kelly gonzales says:

yes because its not right to say that just because you dont believe in prayer you should have your way and ban it from everyone else this is a country of freedom and if its not hurting anyone which it aint it shouldnt be banned

  42. Elizabeth Ciupa says:

Because of all the different religions, I would say no prayer should not be allowed in school.

  43. Debra Bradley says:

I support separation of church and state, however, if a child wishes to pray on their own it should be allowed.

  44. rebecca doll says:

I think they should. I think prayers a good thing and prayer leeds to a better way of life

  45. Stephanie says:

I think that prayer should be allowed in school but only if a child wants to pray. Prayer and religion is individualized and shouldn’t be forced. Being allowed to pray is perfectly fine but being “led” or forced into prayer is wrong.

  46. Lorna Patrick says:

Yes I believe prayer should be allowed in schools : )

  47. Mary Fagans says:

I say yes, if a child wants to pray it should be allowed. Maybe there could be a brief pause in the morning, after the pledge of allegiance, which from what I understand they are trying to get rid of that. Maybe if they let prayer/God in schools there wouldn’t be so much bullying, shooting and killing! Just a thought.

  48. Wendy says:

Of course it should. This country was founded by christians (even though they took the land away from the indians), we’re supposed to be a nation under God. For that very reason, the “people’ who don’t like it should stay home or keep their opinions to theirself. We have rights, freedom of speech and religion. You take that away from schools, you’re taking away their rights. How is it fair to force prisioners to read the bible, but not let the kids at school? I’m so thankful my community stands for God, when they tried to take it out of our schools, we stood our ground and prayed anyway, at football games, everything, everywhere. Even our teachers talk about God sometimes. Every kid has a right for themselves, if they don’t agree, they should just walk away. (Sorry for the long post)

  49. Diane s. says:

I think my child should be allowed to pray. No matter what anyone else does or says.

  50. Melinda says:

Yes, students should be allowed to pray. No, the school should not lead the prayer, nor should anyone associated with the school. Allow quiet time at the beginning of the day for reflection – if students want to pray as part of that reflection, they can. Have a moment of silence at the beginning of events – again, if someone wants to pray, they can. But don’t force a common prayer upon the students – or the staff for that matter. If the school sanctions the prayer, that is violating the rights of students who wish no prayer, or who have a different system of beliefs than that espoused by those leading the prayer. Telling kids to walk away isn’t a fair solution – they can’t walk away at school, and they shouldn’t be driven away from other school functions. Freedom of religion in the constitutional sense is also freedom FROM religion; that was what drove many of the colonists to the new world – getting away from the Church of England.

  51. Susan P says:

    no

  52. Nikki Caldwell Parham says:

YES!! Prayer should definitely be allowed in school! If someone doesn’t believe in prayer then they should be able to sit out of the prayer. They don’t have to participate. It seems like since the government took God and prayer out of schools, all these tragic school shootings have happened!! It’s not just a coincedence!

  53. melissa says:

I believe there should be prayer!! This country was founded on it! People say that prayer should not be forced. But do they ever think that they are taking away our rights by not letting prayer? If GOD was in our schools and businesses like it use to be, I think we would have alot less problems and more honesty in this world!

  54. Michelle says:

No I think prayer should not be brought to school because of that fact that there are so many different religions. I feel as if it is not educational for them as it is their own beliefs which cannot be taught by their teachers. There should not be set rooms implemented for the kids to pray in or anything of that sort, I would find that ridiculous.

  55. diana robinson says:

of course it should be allowed but no one has to have their religion or beliefs infringed upon,,but it dont need to be forced either its a free choice that every one is allowed to make..its the individuals choice..They should have a certain amount of time set during day so every one that wants to can pray their prayers in their religion so that way there no ones religious point of views are being infringed.. :) …and personal note for myself and for my kids i hate the fact they removed god from the schools IT WAS WRONG

  56. Heather Wone says:

NOT in public schools! There is a reason there are private/religious schools.

  57. Kate Burton says:

Kids can pray to their god without saying a word out loud. But no led prayer should be permitted in Public Schools

  58. Leah says:

It should be allowed but not forced I remember when i was a kid we had holiday parties n if parents didn’t want their kids to attend because of religious beliefs they were taken to another place and given a different fun activity to do that didnt go against their religion

  59. Amanda Cosner says:

As a Christian I say yes, it should be! I completely understand that it may be offensive to other religions that don’t worship the same God. However, I believe there should be the option to meet in a certain area to pray as a group if the kids want to. Also they can always pray silently to themselves!

  60. maggie barnes says:

Yes, it should be up to the student if his/her even wants to say a prayer even before lunch should be able to.

  61. Casandra C. says:

Prayer in public schools should be allowed, but not required. My kids know they can pray whenever they want, and they are allowed to offer prayer for those they care about. The thing that should be taught is the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. It is truly sad that kids are growing up in this country not knowing either and not showing respect to the emblems of the country they reside in.

  62. jamie lafever says:

Yes!! I think since we are suppose to be a FREE COUNTRY that we should be able to stop and pray whenever and where ever we like. God is with us no matter if were at school work home or at the doctors office. SO yes prayer should be in school. Doesnt mean everyone has to pray but take a moment out of the day to say a prayer for the ones who want to pray.

  63. Pat Gordon says:

Yes prayer should be allowed in schools, just because we don’t all “pray” the same way doesn’t make it wrong. Everyone prayers in some way to their “Higher Power”, we are not the ones that should judge what others believe. Prayer is personal.

  64. cash out says:

i really think they should be aloud it might be a good effect on the kids

  65. Crystal Carlisle says:

YES! I do believe with all my heart, prayer should be in school. This country was built on religion and I think that is what is wrong with this country now. Everybody wants to control everything that is done or said. There is a battle going on right now in one of our small towns here in Texas, about Scriptures being put on the run through that the cheerleaders make for the football players, at each game. They are being told they can no longer make these, even though they are not forcing their views on anyone. They only made them to inspire their football team. I believe that to tell Christians they cannot pray when and where they want to is wrong and against our first Amendment. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” As a Christian we are to take a stand on our beliefs.”Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven” – Matthew 10:32. I love being a Christian and I feel it’s time to stand up and take back our country.

  66. Linda Sperling says:

    Yes.

  67. shawn f says:

I think there should be The Pledge of Alegiance before school begins ,,but I think there should be some sort of choice if a child wants to recite a prayer ,,it doesnt neccesarily need to be out loud ,,but I don’t think it would hurt anybody to do this

  68. tara s. says:

most definitly. everyone has a right to their own beliefs & if they choose to pray I see nothing wrong with it. I also think the Pledge of Alligance should be a part of every school aged childs routine. We are stripping values away.from our children that we were fortunate enough to recieve.

  69. Jenniffer says:

I think the kids should have a choice and not be made to feel like you should hide it to pray.

  70. angie says:

    not formally.

  71. Jane Ritz says:

Yes, it’s in schools whether it is orally or silent. Believe me, the teacher pray!

  72. Brenda McCracken says:

Prayer is fine provided that this is what the family wants. This is why there are private schools for these reasons. It doesn’t need to be in public school. If a child wants to do a silent prayer then that’s fine. It’s not disrupting anything. Kids have enough on their plate as it is in school. Religion just adds on to it.

  73. Terri P says:

I think students should be allowed a few moments of quiet, personal reflection (or prayer). Beyond that, perhaps not.

    Terri P
    pr4gatheringroses AT gmail DOT com

  74. Kate D. says:

Yes, I think it should be allowed, but it should not be forced. There are too many different religions represented in our schools to pick just one, so children should be allowed to say a quiet prayer if they wish.

  75. Aisha Holley says:

Prayer should be allowed. There’s nothing wrong with that, it does not harm people when someone prays.
