Great Project for Homeschoolers!

Are you a homeschool family? Looking for fun ways to enhance your children’s learning experiences? As someone with a Master’s Degree in education, I know how important it is for lessons to be relevant for students to best learn. And when you can take one project and use it in every subject, you are supercharging your student’s learning experience.

Here’s an idea that you can integrate across every subject and your kids will have a great time.

Have the kids each plan their ‘dream’ vacation. Encourage them to choose a destination outside of the USA so that they can explore a different culture. You will want to let them explore for several weeks before choosing their destination, just as you would do if you were planning an actual vacation. Sign up for email newsletters from Dunhill Travel, Travelzoo and Sherman’s Travel. These online newsletters are constantly updating their information, and about once a week will send out exciting information that will help your students decide where to go. It will also give your students the ability to compare right at their fingertips.

Using Sherman’s, Travelzoo and Dunhill, have them first compare prices for flights and when they find the one they want, add it to the budget.

When the destination is set, have them research things to do, places to see, cool restaurants, etc.

To integrate across all subjects:

Budgeting will help with math skills

Map the location to help with geography

Learn a bit of the location’s history

What food came from this locale? Have student prepare a meal or dish from that culture.

What kind of music came from this locale?

Learn some words in this country’s language

Explore any natural disasters that occurred, or interesting weather patterns.

What is the climate like?

Have each student do their own mini ‘newspaper’ about either current events, or events surrounding a day in the history of the destination. If done using the computer, this will enhance their technology skills.

The choices are endless, and this is a project that your kids will really sink their teeth into. If done properly, it will take several months.

  1. This is a very cool idea! I’m not a homeschooler, but would still do this fun project with my girls! They would love researching their favorite spot…and then they’d REALLY want to go…we could learn about how to save up for that trip too! :)
