How Having Your Own Space Can Make All the Difference!

How having your own space can make all the difference

Whether you are a teenager who wants her own room, a stay-at-home parent that does some freelancing on the side or a man who wants his own office away from work, it is important that you have your own space to devote to the purpose that you designate.

Having your own space can make all of the difference by giving you a location that gives you a sense of pride. You can be more productive in the space, which may make a difference in your bottom line. Here are some key reasons why having your own space can make all the difference in your life.

Define Purpose

A room that consists of a play area, home office and family tv room can easily become an unproductive area whose purpose is jumbled. Think about the reason why you wanted the space in the first place. You may have wanted a room that you could devote to a hobby, like sewing or scrapbooking. You may have wanted a quiet room to meditate and leave all of life’s distractions behind. You may want a space where you can do work from home. Keep these purposes in mind as you design the space to suit your needs. A room that has a defined purpose is more likely to be a room that inspires your creativity or productivity.

Added Security

Having your own space allows you to add an element of security. You may have a separate office property that you can lock up and keep an alarm system on. Even if the space is one room or area in your home, you can still make it secure. Keep the computer and door locked when not in use. You can also establish boundaries with other family members by letting them know when you will be busy in the area and when they will not be allowed into the space.

Choice of Decorating

Having your own space allows you to decorate it in the way that you choose. Having this freedom allows you to use colors, fabrics and textures that connect with you and the purpose of the space. You may want to pick a theme to get started. A Victorian theme might be nice for a woman’s home office or a crafting area. Mid-century modern may help a person keep a functional space that is also warm. Modern lines can keep the space minimal in nature so you can focus on the task at hand.

Paint the walls a color that you like or that you think will inspire you. You may want to avoid dark colors that could pull your energy down or make you tired. You may also want to add an entire wall that is dedicated to your projects. For example, you can paint the wall with magnetic paint and then add notes and magnetic calendars to it.

Another option is to make it like a large bulletin board. Add comfortable flooring, such as heated floors or carpet to motivate you to stay in the room longer. Fabrics can help soften the space. Add personal touches to the space to make it unique, such as your collection of soda bottles or a plaque that you received for your participation or accomplishment in a community or work activity.

Choice of Furnishings

Having your own space also allows you to select the specific furnishings in the room. People often have much different tastes in furnishings, even spouses. So having the opportunity to establish your own space gives you the chance to make the room look the way you want and feel the way that you want. You may prefer having a plush couch in the room to make it a comfortable space. As an alternative, you may prefer dark, leather furnishings to give a sense of power or masculinity to the space.

Creation of Storage

You can add a useful storage area to keep the items that you need in close proximity. You may be able to transform a clothes closet into a storage area that has multiple shelves for files, supplies or other necessary items. You can also add filing cabinets and other large storage devices to the space to keep you organized and on track with your goals.
