If you are not familiar with Captain No Beard and his merry crew, you and your kids are missing out! Author Carole P. Roman’s series is fantastic to use as a fun tool to teach your kids how to be upstanding little people.
In ‘Stuck in the Doldrums’, Captain No Beard and his crew encounter a problem that is every captain’s worst nightmare…the wind stops blowing! But no worries, the Captain, Polly the Parrot, First Mate Hallie, Fribbet the Frog, Mongo the Monkey and Linus the Lion aren’t really upset to find themselves on a deserted island. What’s the big deal? It’s time off! It’s playtime! But things turn stormy when Captain No Beard decides that he is going to be the only one who’s ‘Large and In Charge’. In his mind, no one can say, “You’re not the boss of me!” He decides that he is the big cheese, and starts acting really stinky.
The crew decides that if Captain No Beard is going to be King of the Island (in his own mind), they want no part of it, so they decide to walk off the scene and leave him to his own dastardly devices. It’s not too long before our errant captain figures out that he may be king, but he’s a lonely king. And things are dangerous without the help of his crew.
In the end, the crew supports their captain, and everyone survives another day, ready for new adventures.
