‘What Once Was Lost’ by Kim Vogel Sawyer is a heartwarming and sweet story about Christina Willems, who ministers to a group of poor and poverty stricken people who live with her at the Brambleville Asylum for the Poor. From little blind Tommy to elderly seniors, Christina’s life is all about giving.
One night, a fire breaks out and leaves the home uninhabitable, so Christina must scramble to find shelter for all of the souls in her care. She gets everyone placed except for Tommy, the little blind boy. Her last hope is to approach Levi Jonnson, the mill owner. He is reclusive and happy with his life (he thinks) so he doesn’t want the responsibility of a blind child. But he agrees and is surprised at the bond that quickly grows between them. And Levi and Christina develop feelings for each other as well.
Obstacle after obstacle arises as Christina endeavors to get the farm back to livable condition, and she begins to even question whether or not she is cut out for or effective in this kind of ministry.
Follow her journey as this book ends with love, faith and kindness.
