Book Review: The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever

What would you expect from a children’s book that was eight years in the making? Something brilliant! And that is what you’ll get with Benjamin Morse’s ‘The Oldest Bedtime Story Ever’.

Even before you read the first word, you will be struck by the beauty of the illustrations. In this oversized, large-format book, Morse uses colors, shapes, materials, cut outs, fabric, etc. to create stunning works of art to accompany the story.

The story itself is a masterful retelling of the Old Testament, geared towards children, but enjoyed by adults, too. Morse completed a master’s in biblical interpretation at Oxford University and a master’s in modern art at the Courtauld Institute in London. He was then awarded a PhD from Glasgow University for a dissertation on the Hebrew Bible’s aesthetic diversity. So the way that he tells this precious story is intelligent and appealing. Although scholarly and historically accurate, he doesn’t ‘speak down’ to young readers as he tells this timeless story, but he does write in a way that they can understand.

This is the kind of book that should be treasured and passed down. In fact, you may want to get two copies: one to read and read and read, and the other to save for your kids when they’re adults, and you can hand them a brand new copy of what was once a favorite! My little guy loved it!
