Book Review: The House on Mermaid Point

When I got the opportunity to review Wendy Wax’s upcoming new book, ‘The House on Mermaid Point’, I was thrilled! You see, I had just finished her book, ‘While We Were Watching Downton Abbey’. A friend gave this book to me, and being a Downton Abbey fan, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was unfamiliar with Wax’s work prior to that.

When I received ‘The House on Mermaid Point’, initially I was a little confused. There seemed to be quite a back story that I wasn’t privy to. It read like these characters already knew each other from a past book or story. A quick Google search, and voila! Mystery solved – this is actually the third book with these characters. I would actually suggest that you read the books in order, although this one does quite well as a standalone title.

The premise is that several women with different backgrounds come together and are starring in a reality show in which they do a massive renovation to someone’s home. In this case, their latest project is to redo a famous rocker’s home on an island in the Florida Keys. The rocker is undergoing troubles of his own, from addiction to family problems. The women are complex characters themselves, from an unwed, single mother, to a new divorcee, to a mom and daughter team who are just rediscovering each other.

It’s fun to see who develops a romance, and just how these women are going to deal with the paparazzi and a very difficult production team, all while living aboard a very tiny houseboat. With one tiny bathroom between them.

There are some surprises at the end of the book that you probably won’t see coming, which is always fun, and the setting will  make you want to pack your bags and head to the keys.

I think you’ll enjoy this book! It’s a perfect summer beach read!
