Personal safety should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds, especially us women. There are a lot of things that you can do to enhance your safety when you’re out and about, from simply staying alert to carrying a big gun! Today I want to give you some tips to staying safe when you’re out going about your business.
1. One of the easiest things that you can do is yell, “FIRE!!” This gets people’s attention. While most people are too self conscious to gawk at just anything, most will come running if they hear “Fire!” being yelled. Not only are they curious as to what may be happening, they’re concerned about their own personal safety.
2. Trust your danger instincts. Although this may feel a little embarrassing at times, who cares if you’re wrong? You have nothing to lose by being too cautious. For instance, if you’re the only person on an elevator and someone gets on who makes you feel a bit uncomfortable, just get out! Don’t buy into this dialogue with yourself: “Okay, he looks normal. He wouldn’t do anything to me…he looks like a regular guy.” But if those danger instincts are raising their heads…get out!
3. When you can, run away! An attacker cannot do anything to you as long as you can maintain distance. I realize that this isn’t always possible, but when it is, the choice to flee is always better than the choice to fight.
4. Stay alert! Always keep your eyes and ears open. If you like to listen to music when you’re out, just use one earbud. Don’t become completely absorbed in talking or texting on your cell phone. If you’re sitting on a park bench during lunch reading a book or magazine, try to still be aware of what’s going on around you, especially if the park is not crowded.
5. Project confidence. Attackers look for people who seem meek and mild; quiet and reserved. Even if this is way out of your comfort zone, walk around like you’re Lady Gaga. No one would ever accuse her of being meek and mild! Walk tall…keep your head up and be a ‘hard’ target rather than an ‘easy’ one.
