We were recently given the opportunity to take a look at the new movie coming out, ‘The Boxcar Children’. What a delightful movie! Our whole family enjoyed this film. This is the story of four orphaned children, who are also homeless. The children, Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny show up in a small town one evening. It’s a mystery; no one knows who they are or where they came from. They are terrified that they are going to be sent to live with their grumpy and cruel old curmudgeon of a grandfather, and they are determined not to allow that to happen. They find an old boxcar in the woods, and with a lot of creativity and elbow grease, they turn it into a home that they can be fairly comfortable in. They keep themselves busy; Henry goes to town to earn money and buy food, and the others scavenge for things that they can use in their makeshift home. But one of them becomes seriously ill and they have to reveal themselves to get help.
Not only is the film entertaining, but it really teaches children the value of hard work, teamwork, and putting family first. It also stimulates their imagination and shows how working together can result in some great things. But it also opens the door for you to talk with your children about misconceptions and when it’s okay (and not) to trust the adults in their lives.
The film has a all-star cast of voices including Martin Sheen.
