Book Review: The Bible

Okay, before you all have a hissy fit that I would dare to ‘review’ God’s Holy Word, slow your roll! I am not reviewing God’s Word – but rather, the format of this particular Bible, the NIV First Century Study Bible.

Family Christian Stores sent me this Bible to take a look at, and thankfully, I’ve already read another version of the story :).  I love this Bible! Read on to find out why.

Remember when you were in high school (or maybe you have kids there now) and no one really understood why it was important to know about the world that Shakespeare was living in? Or maybe in music class, what was going on in Mozart’s world? I can hear it now, “Why do I have to know that stuff?” or “That’s not important now!”. But here’s the thing: context is critical when you’re really trying to understand something fully. Think about conversations. When something is taken ‘out of context’ it could be disastrous. I mean, what if you overhear a friend say, “I seriously can’t stand them!” and you think she’s talking about you and your family, when she’s actually referring to lima beans or something. See? Context!

And this Bible presents far more context than any other Bible I’ve ever had. Here’s what you’ll see in this Bible:

Book Introductions: They give you details about the author and information about the background for that particular book. There are also outlines and full-color photos.

Day in the Life Articles: This is my favorite. These articles give you information and insight about what it was actually like during Biblical times. I found the Day in the Life article about midwives to be fascinating. She did a lot more than deliver babies! She prepared the room where the child was to be conceived. No, not born…conceived! She might cast spells, play music, drive out unwelcome spirits or sing incantations. She might even prescribe aphrodisiacs. Who knew?

Bottom of the Page Notes: These notes are tied to verses on the page, and help to fully explain what you are reading.

Textual Articles: These articles go into greater depth about certain topics, such as “What is the Biblical View on Slavery”. (Spoiler alert…it’s wrong).

Word Studies: Another of my favorite parts! I have always been fascinated by words and learning languages. This Bible will take a word and explain to you where it came from, what it meant in context, and what it means to you today. I love that.

This Bible also has a veritable treasure trove of maps, photos and illustrations.

If you’d like to have a Bible in your library that will more fully help you to understand God’s Word in context, this is the Bible for you. It’s available at Family Christian Stores. And here’s a thought – this would make a great gift!

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
