fierce convictions

I am embarrassed to admit that before reading Fierce Convictions, I had actually never heard of Hannah More. She was an amazing woman (interestingly enough considered the ‘First Victorian Woman’) and this story gives us a beautiful and realistic glimpse into the challenges that she faced as a woman, abolitionist, Christian, and educator.

It was fascinating to have a look into the times of pre-Victorian Britain. The rights of women and slaves were in the nascent stages of being brought to light, and Hannah More had a big part in that. She had a heart for women’s issues, and in that time, it was difficult to display her convictions. Women’s education was frowned upon and there were almost no female authors.

The poor were virtually ignored by most and the social mores of the time did not dictate compassion towards the less fortunate. Education for those who lived in poverty was unheard of. But Hannah More was compelled to change that ideology. And because of her passion, she was able to bring about social change, albeit slowly. She had hurdles to overcome that women in today’s world could not begin to comprehend.

If you are looking for a story that you can sink your teeth into with a heavy dose of inspiration, this is the book for you!
