When I learned about Best Buy’s commitment to educational technology, I was thrilled to share it with you. Most of you don’t know that I have a master’s degree in Educational Technology. What in the world is that? It is an advanced education degree that studies how to use technology in the classroom all across every subject area.
It’s a relatively new degree (in the realm of college degrees, anyway). When the higher education facilities realized that our students were going to be faced with advanced technology both in their homes and for the rest of their lives, it was decided that incorporating technology in the classroom would enhance students’ learning and retention.
I’d like to speak to the teachers for a moment (including you parents who homeschool). Incorporating technology into your lessons is vitally important for your students to be able to keep up and excel in today’s world. And all it takes is a little bit of creativity to add technology to your lesson plans. Here are just a few very simple ideas:
- Have one student each day be the class photographer and take photos of what went on in class. This student is then responsible for uploading the photos to a computer and creating a simple PowerPoint slideshow that will start the next morning’s day.
- Have students create a newsletter on the computer for what was happening during a particular period in history (this could be a several week long project).
- Divide students into teams – have each team create a video based upon a certain character you’re studying in English or History. (You can do this with only one camera by letting each team use it for 4 weeks or so and have presentations during the entire school year).
- Have very young children identify colors, numbers, letters or shapes on a tablet.
- Create your own slideshows for lesson plans. You can get super creative with this and they’re far more interesting and engaging that writing on a black/white board
