When I was given the opportunity to review a book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas, I knew it was a book I wanted to read.
Stories about the Holocaust have always gripped me, and this one is no different. Bonhoeffer was one of the first to speak out against Hitler’s horrible regime, even though it would cost him his life. Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi dissident, and founding member of the Confessing Church. His story is a testament to what one man can accomplish in the face of unbelievable adversity.
Readers need to be aware that although this abridged version is surely easier to ‘digest’ than the original unabridged (600+ pages) version, it’s still not a light read. There is a lot of history about the confusing Third Reich; what they did and why they presumably did it.
Bonhoeffer’s moral convictions led him to becoming a double agent; a death sentence if you were caught. Although Bonhoeffer was a pastor and teacher, it wasn’t enough for him to simply ‘preach’ against the Nazi regime. He became involved in a plot to assassinate Hitler, which is what ultimately caused his execution. He is a true martyr, and it’s easy to see why today’s Christians still study his writings.
This is a great overview of Bonhoeffer’s life and beliefs and will make you want to know more.
