Book Review: Miracle at the Higher Grounds Cafe, Max Lucado

miracle at the higher grounds

Like others, I had never read a fictional story by Max Lucado. But since he is one of my favorite authors, I wanted to give it a go. And anything set in a cafe with yummy baked goods has to be a delicious read, right?

Chelsea thought she had it all: a successful and handsome NFL player husband and a couple of super cute kids. But the husband went ‘out of bounds’ and Chelsea left him. She needed to make a living, and decided to reopen the Higher Grounds Cafe, a coffee shop and bakery left to her by her mother, and which had been in her family for years.
This was a great plan, because Chelsea was a great baker. Except no one came. Everyone in San Antonio was too busy visiting the more trendy ‘name brand’ coffee shops.

But God had a plan (doesn’t He always?) and one day a mysterious (and hilariously dressed) stranger, Manny, shows up at the cafe. Things get more and more strange when a couple shows up to install an otherworldly looking ‘modem’ that Chelsea didn’t order.

People discovered (through technology – but I don’t want to give it all away) that they could come to the cafe, ask God a question, and get an answer. Boom. The place was packed.
But tragedy struck, and Chelsea had to pick up the pieces. Would she rely on God to help again? Could she? You’ll have to read the book to get the rest of the story.
It’s a highly entertaining read, and utterly delightful.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book for review, but all opinions are my own.
