Recently I was given some of Colgate’s Enamel health products to try and share my thoughts with you.
To be honest, I haven’t ever really given my tooth enamel much thought, but in checking out these products, I did some research and found out a lot of great information. I found this great article on the Colgate Website:
The enamel on your teeth is the hardest and most highly mineralized substance in your body. It covers the outer layer of each tooth, and it is the most visible part of the tooth. The enamel is made up mostly of minerals, primarily hydroxyapatite. The color can vary from light yellow to grayish white. Because it is semi-translucent, it is only partially responsible for the color of your teeth.
Enamel plays a very important role in protecting your teeth from decay, so it is important to do everything that you can to prevent your enamel from eroding. It forms a strong barrier that shields the inner layers of your teeth from the effects of acids and plaque. It also protects the sensitive inner layers of your teeth from foods and beverages that are very hot or very cold.
If your enamel is destroyed, your body does not make more to replace it. Unlike other parts of your body — like your bones — enamel does not contain any living cells, so it cannot regenerate.
You can protect your enamel by avoiding foods that are known to cause a lot of damage. Sugary foods and acidic fruits and beverages are among the most damaging to your enamel. When those substances stick to your teeth and interact with bacteria in your mouth, lactic acid is produced, which can damage your enamel. Avoid these foods when you can, and if you do consume them, remember to brush thoroughly afterward.
Biting or chewing very hard foods, like hard candy or ice cubes, can also damage your enamel by causing it to crack or chip, so they should also be avoided. If you do indulge in hard candy, suck on it.
Of course, you can also protect your enamel by practicing good oral hygiene habits, such as regular brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and visiting your dental professional for regular professional cleanings. Using toothpaste, such as Colgate® Enamel Health™, can also help protect enamel from acid damage.
Enamel is an important substance that deserves to be taken care of. You can learn more about tooth anatomy in the Colgate Oral Care resources.
And let’s talk about sensitivity for a minute. This isn’t a problem that plagues me a lot, but I do have some sensitivity when biting into something cold. Do you? If so, try Colgate’s Enamel Health Toothbrush with a built-in sensitivity relief pen. This is great, and after using it for a few weeks, I noticed a marked decrease in my sensitivity to cold. This is a clinically proven, revolutionary toothbrush system designed to relive sensitivity directly at the source of pain. It’s different, because most sensitivity toothpastes primarily just numb the pain. This one actually shields the exposed nerve and creates a seal against sensitivity pain. All you do is brush and then apply the gel directly to the source of the pain. Massage for about a minute and no need to rinse! The pen stores right inside the toothbrush! Genius!
The toothpaste has a super fresh, cool mint flavor and kept my mouth feeling fresh for hours, and I felt as though I was really doing something good for my teeth. It helps to replenish natural calcium in order to strengthen enamel, and it gently polishes so that germs are less likely to stick. The multi-protection formula:
- Helps replenish natural calcium
- Helps build increasing protection against sensitivity
- Gently polishes
- Gently whitens
- Fights cavities
- Freshens breath
This is a great enamel health and sensitivity relief system for the entire family. You can purchase it at your local grocery market and most big box stores.
