This book, The Mother & Child Project, is chock full of heartbreak. But at the same time…it’s overflowing with hope.

Within these pages you will find story after story of women and children in third world countries whose stories will leave you wondering, “Why am I so blessed?” And even more, “Why is this happening in the 21st century?” The statistics are staggering. Last year alone, more than 6.6 million children under the age of five died from preventable, treatable diseases. And this was mostly because the parents did not have access to basic medical care. Whether you agree with the insurance issues here in the United States, you will have to agree that we are blessed beyond measure. Our newborn babies have access to simple antibiotics, vaccines and other care necessary.

There are over 40 contributors to this book, from artists and actors, nurses and doctors, politicians and pastors, all partnering together to raise awareness and speak for those who don’t have a voice. Why? Because in Proverbs 31:8, God tells us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Consider these words from an Amy Grant song, ‘Third World Woman':

What if I were that mother staring from my TV?
What if that were my brown-eyed baby
Hungry as she could be?
What if that were my family?
What if that was my world?
Waiting on water, waiting on a vaccine,
Waiting on someone to bring me a bag of beans.

Have you thought about that? What if it were you? These stories especially touched my heart as our church sent a mission team to Guatemala just this morning. We will be providing 20 families with enough food to last one month: 40 pounds of rice and beans. For about the price of a few Starbuck’s drinks. Our team will minister to them and build houses for shelter. But for as many people as we help, there are thousands who don’t get help.

Each section of the book starts with a personal story of a woman living in a developing country. You will hear her words and see her heart as she shares stories about her life, her marriage and her children. And when you think about her, you will cry. And then hopefully you’ll get inspired to do something.

The goal of this book is that when people read these touching essays, they will be inspired to action. Hope Through Healing Hands, the compiler of the book, offers many options for you to help, from simply donating to actual volunteer opportunities.
