Okay, let’s face it. Reality shows who feature Christian families are getting torn apart these days. You know what I’m talking about. It’s heartbreaking. But the beautiful thing is that they just keep going strong in their faith.
Although I have not watched ‘Duck Dynasty’ a lot, I have been impressed by what I have seen and heard of the Robertson Family, so when Family Christian Stores sent me Jep and Jessica Robertson’s new book: The Good, The Bad, and the Grace of God, I was excited to read it.
You may know Jep as the youngest of the Duck Dynasty clan, and Jessica, his lovely blond helpmate and wife. They were both raised in the south, and you’ll enjoy reading about their typical southern childhoods – when kids played outside and had dinner every night around the table with family. It was a normal childhood and although they lived in the same town, they didn’t meet as children.
Life moved along as it will during childhood, and then adolescence struck. And it was tough. Jep was a superb athlete and showed great skill and promise in basketball. But he broke his ankle, which ended his promising sports career, and started him on a downward spiral that included alcohol and drugs and partying…a lot. Jess also went through something fairly normal for a high school girl: her heart was crushed by a boy. And not only did he crush her heart, he crushed her self-esteem. This situation caused an eating disorder as Jess tried to bury her pain and gain control of her life.
Things continued to spiral downward for both of these children of God in their disobedience. Jess even ended up getting married (to someone other than Jep). She felt obligated to walk down the aisle, even though she knew in her heart that it wasn’t right. Both of them were raised in church, but had never really accepted a personal relationship with Christ.
Through Jep and Jess’s individual stories and testimonies, we see the path that brought them together, first as friends. And that strong friendship turned into an equally strong love story. They struggled, both with outside influences and with past secrets. “Friends” even tried to break them up, but they both realized that God had given them this love for each other for a reason.
I loved reading about how they triumphed and walked through the fire together, always endeavoring to put God first and place Him at the very center of their marriage and family. It’s inspiring!
You will thoroughly enjoy this book! Whether you’re a Duck Dynasty binge watcher, or you’ve never seen a single episode, this book will inspire you! It’s available for pre-buy at Family Christian Stores here.
