I am loving this debut CD by Dan Bremnes. Before Family Christian Stores gave me the opportunity to review the CD, I had not heard of this artist. But his voice is exceptional. I have a voice degree, so I have a bit of a different perspective when it comes to vocalists. I admit, I’m pretty picky. Most of the popular singers that people like are those who I don’t really care for. My husband calls me a music snob. Hmmm…he may be right.
But Dan Bremnes is a fresh, new artist that I am really enjoying. In this day and age where so many artists are better marketers than musicians, Bremnes is a welcome change. His voice is not overproduced – he has real talent.
On the first song and title track of the album, “Where the Light Is” Bremnes goes into a perfect falsetto on the chorus and does it well. Take it from someone who knows – this isn’t an easy feat!
Most of the tracks are medium to up tempo, and some have a world beat flavor and vibe. I also love that the piano is featured on several cuts, specifically on some of the intros. I have found myself with some of these songs stuck in my head for hours; not a bad thing!
When I listen to Christian music, not only are the vocals and instruments important to me, but the lyrics have to pass my test, too, and this album doesn’t disappoint. The lyrics are theologically and doctrinally sound. The gospel is not watered down!
