Our Favorite New Books for Kids!

dinosaur doodle

Our favorite part of this book is the dinosaur’s cool “Googly Eyes” that move with your child and create tons of laughs! You can encourage your would-be artist with the great step by step instructions on drawing their favorite dinosaurs.

Everyone can doodle, but sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. The Go Fun! Dinosaur Doodle Book sparks creativity immediately with a pair of moving lenticular eyes staring back at you from every page, ready to be turned into a dinosaur that’s devilish or darling. Step-by-step “Doodle Eyedeas” are featured throughout when the creativity isn’t flowing, along with fascinating facts about dinosaurs (did you know that Stegosaurus had a brain the size and shape of a hot dog?!). Perfect for the car, a rainy day, or any time you need a doodle break, you won’t be able to take your eyes off of these doodled dinos!

Need something for a road trip? Or even a short car ride? How about waiting in the doctor’s office? This book will do the trick! Not only will it keep your child entertained, but teaches them the art of keen observation, a needed skill.

Looks can be deceiving.  At first glance, two comics can appear to be identical, but your keen eye will soon spot the six differences between the “twin” pictures.  Spy the changes and go have fun with Go Fun! Spot Six Differences.

goodnight songs season

Goodnight Songs: A Celebration of the Seasons by Margaret Wise Brown is one of our new favorites. Brown wrote the beloved ‘Goodnight Moon’, a treasured book in our home. We were thrilled to see another book from her. This is the follow up to the best selling ‘Goodnight Songs’. This book has twelve lullabies, ten of which have never before been published! A different award-winning artist illustrates each. And the great part of this one is that it comes with a CD that has all of the lullabies on it! Our little guy is really enjoying this one!

one fine day, just run away
To a long unscheduled day
To where great clouds go sailing by
Above the birds and butterfly.

Fluffy clouds, butterflies, furry bunnies, and life from a bug’s-eye view: This stunning sequel to the New York Times bestseller Goodnight Songs celebrates the beauty and wonder of nature all year long. Once again, a treasure trove of Margaret Wise Brown’s newly uncovered verses receives loving treatment from 12 award-winning artists, including Floyd Cooper, Peter Brown, David Small, Molly Idle, and Bob Staake. From a little bear singing one morning in May to a soft snowfall, mysterious, deep, and glowing, each song is magical.

An accompanying CD, with lilting songs beautifully composed and sung by Emily Gary and Tom Proutt, makes this the perfect gift for children.

no yeti

Christmas is just around the corner, and one of our traditions is to find new Christmas or winter themed books and read them during the month of December. This one will be super fun! And since there’s a pair of brothers in our home, our guys will especially enjoy this one.

It’s a snowy, blowy, wintry day — just perfect for a yeti hunt! Or so thinks big brother. But younger brother is not as convinced. Questions abound: Have you ever seen a yeti? Is a yeti strong? Can a yeti run fast?

Children will love trying to find the yeti in the pictures as the boys continue on their quest.

all the lost things

I love this book! Olive, our little heroine, is out for a walk one day and a noise from a manhole makes her go check it out (as with most curious little kids!). She finds an underground world full of box upon box of her city’s lost things. And not only material things, but hope and dreams and courage. You’ll love seeing what our little Olive does with this find!

Olive is not your ordinary girl. And one day when this spunky young lady decides to go for a walk in her grumpy, too-busy city, she finds some extraordinary things. What Olive does with them will delight and inspire. This lively picture book is filled with the author’s exuberant collage artwork and playfully hand-lettered words.

welcome to mars

What kid hasn’t dreamed or imagined life on another planet? Our little guy, who’s eight, is totally into all things space. And who better to educate him on another planet than Buzz Aldrin, who has a vision for not only traveling to Mars, but inhabiting it! Buzz takes kids on a wonderful adventure, and not only that, they will learn so much. Your child will be able to envision what life on Mars could actually be like.

If you’re a homeschooling parent, this book would be fantastic. You could build so many lessons including science, geography, English, spelling, even math. This one book has enough material to be integrated into a whole unit’s worth of lesson plans.

Space is still the final frontier and Mars continues to make news and attract generations of young people. In this fascinating book, hero-astronaut Buzz Aldrin challenges curious kids to think about Mars as not just a faraway red planet but as a possible future home for Earthlings!

What will your new home be like? How will you get there? What will you eat for breakfast? Find out what life might be like far, far from Earth as you navigate your way through this fun and fascinating book. What kid wouldn’t want to blast off with him on this (literary) journey!
