National Geographic Children’s Books – Awesome!

brain games

I have a little guy who’s eight, and he would much rather read science books than fiction. Sit him down with anything “sciency” (weather, animals, space, the human body) and he is enthralled! So when I got the opportunity to take a look at these super cool National Geographic books, I knew my little guy would love them. I was right!

This first one, ‘Brain Games: The Mind-Blowing Science of Your Amazing Brain’, is downright fascinating. It’s an interactive book — a companion to the National Geographic Channel hit show – where kids explore the parts of the brain and how it all works, brainy news nuggets from a neuroscientist, plus fun facts and crazy challenges.

There are five chapters of fast facts, puzzles, games, and challenges that delve into how the human brain functions. Inside the book, you and your little learners will find out how the brain:

  • Makes memories
  • Deals with emotions
  • Turns senses into thoughts
  • Directs the body’s movements

Each chapter has a ton of fun, starting with a challenge. Such as, “What would make you more stressed? Having to do a timed test or performing in front of an audience?” Why would one affect you more?

There are colorful and vibrant photos all throughout, with plenty to catch the interest of youngsters from 8 to 12, but I think even older kids would enjoy this one. This book has a myriad of fun with games, puzzles and pictures and the best part? It’s educational!

edible science

This next one, ‘Edible Science: Experiments You Can Eat‘ – well – it’s a win-win! Not only are the experiments fun and educational, but you can eat them! What could be better than that??? My little guy was hooked from the very first edible experiment – making homemade ice cream with ziploc bags.

There are five great chapters. Each experiment has step by step instructions and most are easy enough for kids to do with a little supervision. There are three difficulty levels: easy, medium and ‘grab a grown up’. Additionally, each experiment is explained in easy to understand terms about why and how it works.

Each experiment is accompanied by tips, and has great photos to accompany the steps, with a photo of how the finished product should look.

If you have a budding molecular gastronomist, this book is a must!
